America’s Taylor Townsend showed just how dominant she can get in singles. Yesterday in Toronto, Townsend found an overwhelming victory against her Latvian opponent. Despite a great form in doubles, Townsend has fallen short of upholding similar elitism in singles. However, such days seem to be in the past. Following a captivating feat in singles, Townsend oozes confidence in how she achieved her victory.

Although most of her glory has come in doubles, Townsend managed to show her elite form in singles. The world number 71 left viewers spellbound when she defeated WTA no 11 Jelena Ostapenko by 6-2, 6-1 in the Round of 16 to reach the Canadian Open’s quarterfinals. Post-match, Townsend revealed an interesting story that reflected her confidence about her form.

Okay. This was a crazy day you guys. Let me tell you a story. We were playing not before 12:30. I got here at 12:24. I don’t know how the hell I did it. Maybe it’s because I wasn’t thinking but yeah I just came out and just played but it was so crazy. I didn’t hit a ball. I didn’t warm up. I literally did two bike sprints and I was like alright let’s go. So I guess that worked,” she said.

For Townsend, who earned her first Grand Slam title in doubles with Siniakova a few weeks back, this was her third biggest win. Previously, she defeated Simona Halep in the 2019 US Open’s second round and Jessica Pegula in the 2023 Italian Open’s second round. Townsend reached the doubles top 10 rank last year. This American mom-on-tour has already garnered a lot of faith with her outstanding talent in doubles. Now, it’s time for her to show how well she is in singles. Townsend could participate in the Canadian Open because of an interesting incident. While she is hailed as a lucky loser, this WTA star is leaving no stone unturned to prove her worth.

Despite struggles, Taylor Townsend is dedicated to the 2024 Canadian Open

Townsend has been impressive in doubles, but in singles, not so much. She played in the qualifying rounds for tournaments such as the Canadian Open. Yulia Putintseva’s sudden withdrawal from the WTA 1000 championship following her unfulfilled recovery from a knee injury brought Townsend a golden chance in Toronto. Despite losing against Erika Andreeva in the qualifiers, Townsend could participate in the Round of 64. She took full advantage of her chance and went ham. However, her road to the quarterfinals wasn’t an easy one.
