Is Camila Giorgi's abrupt retirement a loss for tennis, or was it time for her to move on?

The tennis world is abuzz with the sound of silence! Camila Giorgi’s abrupt retirement in May left fans feeling perplexed. An absence of clarity from her side what added more to it, which made the whispers grow louder. At last, Giorgi, who was last found on the tennis courts of Miami, has shattered the silence, after returning to Italy. Let’s see what’s brewing in the shadows!

When Camila Giorgi lost in a straight set two consecutive breadsticks defeat to World No. 1, Iga Swiatek at the Miami Open earlier this season, all of us thought she would be back soon with greater power and resilience. Unfortunately, she didn’t. Not only did she disappear from the tennis courts, but she would go on to announce her farewell to the sport itself.

Naturally, it came as a surprise to his fans and the whole tennis community alike. Almost four months have gone by, but the reason behind her retirement is still murky. But at last, the 32-year-old former player has broken her silence. While answering a Q&A session, one fan asked the Italian tennis player what we all wanted the answer to: “Why you finished your tennis career?”

Giorgi’s cryptic reply was, “Because I felt it was the right moment.” If one looks at her trajectory this season, it won’t be difficult to notice that she was indeed going through a rough patch. Starting the season with a Round of 32 exit at Brisbane and not making it to the second round of any tournament except Indian Wells (Round of 64), the tennis courts were not treating her right. But wait, that might not be the only reason.

As per several reports, Camila Giorgi was accused of some discrepancies in her tax records shortly after her defeat in Miami. Not only was she wanted for investigation, but the questionnaires were extended to her family as well. Strangely, soon after, speculations of her fleeing from Italy to the U.S.A. with her family started rising, and a few days later, her statement of retirement further came as a shock to everyone. “I am happy to formally announce retirement from my tennis career…” Giorgi wrote on her Instagram.

Furthermore, a few days ago, she took to her Instagram and shared the news of being back in her home country, during a Q&A session, waving away the claims as “fake news.” Her recent statement further provides a bit of clarity on the reason behind her decision. Surprisingly, Giorgi might not be the only one who thinks it was the “right moment.” Earlier, one of her WTA peers also had the same opinion.

Tathiana Garbin says why Camila Giorgi’s “conclusion” to tennis “was perhaps necessary”

When Camila Giorgi debuted in the top 30, almost 12 years after turning pro, the tennis community held their breath to see her climb the ladder of success rapidly. But sadly, Giorgi, a former quarterfinalist at Wimbledon and the 2021 Canadian Open champion could not maintain the same momentum going forward. Looking at her ranking a few weeks before her retirement, you would see her at 116.

Referring to this, Tathiana Garbin, with whom Giorgi played in the BJK Cup last year, said, “I believe that for a player who has reached the top, it is difficult to then start again from the qualifiers and with a low ranking. A conclusion was perhaps necessary.

Currently, Giorgi’s new goal is to establish herself as a fashion influencer and promoting her clothing brand, Giomila. She might have a new passion to follow, but her sudden disappearance and just as mysterious reappearance from the tennis world still continues to baffle everyone.
