Serena Williams‘ legacy is etched in the history books forever! But while she is arguably the greatest of all time on the court, it’s her quirks off the court that often catch the spotlight as well. Who can forget her “miracle coffee” moment at the Hopman Cup after conceding a bagel against Flavia Pennetta? That mid-match espresso turned her game around, as she clinched the next two sets and the match with that. The 43-year-old’s love for coffee is no secret – especially when it’s served right.

Serena has been busy with her entrepreneurial ventures since hanging up her racket. She’s been promoting her brand WYN Beauty with Vogue and has taken an ownership stake in the Toronto Tempo, a new WNBA team set to debut in 2026. The 23-time GS winner is always on the move, posting about her newest projects from different parts of the world. Recently, she received a warm reception for her legacy on the court.

On March 14, Serena shared an interesting video on her Instagram story. It featured a cappuccino with fancy foam art of her from the 2021 Australian Open, where she made it to the semifinals to face Naomi Osaka. Although she didn’t win that match, the artwork was indeed touching. In the video, she could be heard saying, “Somebody around here knows how to treat a lady!” to show her appreciation for the gesture.

Coincidentally, Serena just celebrated 25 years of her legacy! She won her first Grand Slam at the 1999 US Open, rewriting history at the age of 17. This honor was celebrated by ESPNW and Serena herself, who shared a throwback photo on her Instagram story in February. She hopped on the viral ‘It Girl’ trend, posting a photo taken by Clive Brunskill. “You at 17 without cheating!” the post read.

And, it seems her fans are quite enthusiastic about sharing their love as well. What better way to do that than serving a special coffee? We all know coffee gets Serena’s “feet moving.”

Serena opens up about how coffee pushed her on the court

Back in 2018, Serena Williams made a stunning comeback at the Hopman Cup. She was down 0-6 in the first set against Italy’s Flavia Pennetta but turned the match around with a little help from caffeine. “I’m so jet-lagged and Flavia played really, really well, and yeah, everyone needs coffee every now and then. I needed coffee to get my feet moving,” she said in the post-match on-court interview, drawing cheers from the crowd.

After losing the first set, Serena had asked a ball girl to fetch her a hot coffee, initially unsure if it was allowed. “I just asked them to get me a shot of espresso. I asked them if it was legal because I’ve never done it before,” she explained.

The coffee break did the trick, helping Serena click into gear as she went on to win the match 0-6, 6-3, 6-0. “I am a coffee drinker. I didn’t have mine this morning and I was just feeling it, so I just had to get some coffee into me,” she added.

The Hopman Cup was part of Serena’s preparation for the Australian Open, where she aimed to win her sixth title. She later watched from the stands as her compatriot John Isner secured a thrilling win over Fabio Fognini, powering Team USA to victory.
