A few seasons ago, Simona Halep was at the peak of her competitive tennis journey, having won two major titles and attaining the world No. 1 stature. However, the previous season turned out to be a disaster for the Romanian tennis star, as she experienced a massive fall after failing a doping test. The 31-year-old was accused of consuming a banned substance ‘roxadustat’, and was immediately suspended by the International Tennis Integrity Agency.

Since then, the two-time Grand Slam singles champion has filed numerous appeals to prove her innocence. However, the latest results aren’t looking good for her. The WTA star has received a jolting blow as she has now been suspended for four years according to the latest announcement by the tennis authorities. Many in the sporting community, however, aren’t in favor of the brutal decision as one of them brought to light the sad reality of tennis when compared to bans in other sports.

The WTA player’s suspension was declared in a statement by ITIA who asserted that there was a significant amount of supporting evidence for the banned drugs. Taking note of her prolonged ban, Gill Gross, the Tennis Channel broadcaster, has been compelled to expose the harsh reality of the sport in comparison to other games.

He tweeted, “Maximum suspensions for first-time doping violation offenders. UFC: two years NFL: four games (25% of season) MLB: 80 games (50% of season) Tennis: four years”

Gross further brought to light the length of the bans in other sports like the NBA and NHL while comparing it to that in tennis. He commented, “I can keep going. NBA: 25 games (30% of the season) NHL: 20 games (25% of the season)”

Apart from Gross, a pioneering tennis organization has also expressed its displeasure with the “unfair” decision made by the authorities.

Halep’s ban gets criticized by Djokovic-led rebel association

Novak Djokovic-led PTPA, which was launched to address the needs of lower-ranked players, has supported the Romanian in her off-court fight. Now that the WTA player is once again in the face of adversity, the rebel association recently came forward to express their blunt views on Halep’s prolonged ban. On Twitter, the PTPA asserted that the four-year ban issued by the tennis authorities is “both unfair and unacceptable”.

Additionally, they claimed that it was the result of “unexplained delays” following Halep’s filing of numerous appeals demonstrating her innocence that she consumed the prohibited substance unintentionally.
