Greek tennis star Maria Sakkari is one of the best current-generation tennis players. The 26-year-old is currently world number 5 in WTA rankings. Coming from a brilliant run in Berlin, she will be confident going into the Eastbourne international. Notably, the grass court competition is also going to be the comeback tournament of American tennis star Serena Williams.

Speaking about the same, the 26-year-old was all praise for the legendary tennis player.

Maria Sakkari calls Serena Williams the greatest female athlete of all time

Showing her excitement on the return of the legendary player the world number 5 was full of praise. Recalling how she grew up watching Serena and Venus, she expressed her happiness to see her back on the court.

“I grew up watching Serena and Venus because my grandma is a tennis freak,” Sakkari said. “I just feel like it’s very good for tennis that she is back and I think that it brought a little bit more suspense.” She said.

Speaking further, the 26-year-old said that the 23-time Grand Slam champion can be a potential threat if she manages to win some games and gets the momentum. Also, the Greek hailed Serena as the greatest female athlete of all time.

“I’m sure that everyone wants to avoid her, especially if she wins a few matches. She will start feeling good about her game and she is Serena Williams. She is the greatest female athlete of all time.” Sakkari concluded.

Serena to play in Wimbledon 2022

American tennis legend Serena Williams is the center of all discussions right now. The 23-time Grand Slam champion surprised everyone with her announcement of playing in this year’s Wimbledon Championship.

Notably, the 40-year-old last played in 2021 Wimbledon, where she retired midway through her first-round match because of a hamstring injury. The return was least expected, especially after the announcement of the entry list for Wimbledon 2022, which had no mention of Serena.

Serena will partner will Ons Jabeur of Tunisia to play in the doubles competition of Eastbourne International. This will work as her preparation going into the Wimbledon Championship.
