The Wimbledon press conferences always provide us with some new and interesting information. As the players sit down with the journalists ahead of tennis’ grandest event, they reflect back on some fond memories. When Coco Gauff arrived at the presser, she made sure to regale the media with an interesting anecdote.

Back in October 2019, Coco Gauff made it to the main draw of the Linz Open in Austria following a Maria Sakkari withdrawal. She went on to win the title and became one of the few players to have won a title as a Lucky Loser. She also became the youngest American woman (15) to win a tour-level title since 1991.

Gauff said at the Wimbledon press conference, “I found out 20 or 30 minutes before the match (about withdrawal) and my dad said ‘Well, you can’t lose twice’ and we kind of just laughed at it. I don’t think we ever thought that we win the tournament. I actually broke the trophy that same day. And I remember they were taking pictures and I was trying to hide the broken piece.

Gauff was brutally honest in the presser. Well, she has always been honest and not afraid of being judged. She had made stunning confessions in last year’s Wimbledon press conference as well despite the possibility of giving a mental edge to her opponent.

Gauff’s confession at last year’s Wimbledon

The American spoke about the quietness of the Centre Court ahead of last year’s Wimbledon. She said that the pin-drop silence of the Centre Court made her nervous. Gauff also called Wimbledon the prettiest tournament at the same time but from her little experience of the slam, she has felt her nerves quite often.
