Serena Williams announced her retirement through an impactful Vogue essay last year. Talking about her achievements and her future plans, one thing was clear. It was no longer an option for her. She wanted a bigger family and she could not do both. Once again, a similar picture has come to limelight from one of her biggest fans and renowned tennis star Naomi Osaka.
The Japanese tennis player recently gave birth to her beautiful daughter, Shai. Taking on a similar perspective on how male athletes have it easier than female ones who want to have a family of their own.

The four-time Grand Slam champion and her boyfriend Cordae recently welcomed their “hope” Shai a few days ago. This is undoubtedly one of the biggest moments of their lives. However, it also brings Osaka to face the harsh reality of being an athlete and a mother.
In a recent podcast interview with Mountaintop Conversations, Osaka opened up about the apprehensions she faced with motherhood. She stated, “I always wondered what my sponsors would do and stuff like that.” She could not help but compare herself to her male counterparts who were leading sporting careers without any hindrance despite having babies.
Osaka said, “I wonder why guys that are younger than me and around the same age as me are able to have kids.” The difference between the two realities struck her hard and she stated, “They’re kind of just walking around like everything’s fine. And irritating me a little bit.”
With four Grand Slam titles under her name out of which two she secured by defeating the GOAT of WTA, Serena Williams, Osaka could not help but scoff. She stated, “Because I felt like I was a lot more accomplished than them.”
However, at the end of the day, the reality was as brutal as her idol Serena Williams conveyed during her retirement. She stated, “But they weren’t dealing with any of the repercussions that women have if they need to have kids. So that kind of softened the pressure for me.”
This is something that Williams felt strongly about when she announced her retirement through Vogue. The two different worlds of male and female athletes struck Williams hard too.

If Serena Williams were a guy, things would have been different
The farewell of one of the biggest tennis stars of all time, Williams took a toll on the tennis realm. Williams set the bar for the new generation of WTA players.
But this is not something she desired. In her retirement essay, Williams boldly stated that she did not want to choose between tennis and family. However, she knew how much she wanted a bigger family. Olympia herself wanted to be an elder sister. Despite it all, Williams remembered her first love, tennis. She unapologetically conveyed that if she was a guy, she would be winning on the court instead of writing the retirement letter. Meanwhile, her wife would have been expanding the family for her.
