Serena Williams’ indomitable spirit faced a tough test back in 2017 when a complicated childbirth left the tennis icon to face life-threatening complications. However, ultimately, Serena Williams overcame the challenge and brought the adorable Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. to this world.

Williams recently took a trip down memory lane and recalled the trauma she faced on Instagram. The tennis legend’s post got a rousing reception from her fans on Instagram as they showered her with their love and support.

In her Instagram post, Williams wrote, “I shared my birth story and I was stunned by the outpouring of support and similar experiences women have had.” She also shared an alarming statistic. “Black women in the United States are over three times more likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes.”

 

Her Instagram post certainly captured the attention of her fans, who were quick to respond. For instance, Instagram user @suthrncan wrote, “I watched your documentary and was shocked by the medical gaslighting while you kept insisting something wasn’t right. I’m grateful you and Olympia are healthy.”

@yolibreeze also shared her heartfelt opinion with the tennis icon. “Sadly it took a horrible experience for you to get some attention on the matter. Thanks for having the courage to speak up and share.”

Another user, @read.the.danual commented, “Black mommas matter ❤️ You are appreciated”. User @venusxserena was also quite vocal in support for Serena as she wrote, “Thank you for advocating for our black women! You’re so strong queen!💪🏾❤️.

What happened to Serena during childbirth?

Serena chose to deliver Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., who is the youngest co-owner in professional sports history right now, via caesarean section. However, her choice proved to be life-threatening. She developed severe problems in her lungs owing to the presence of multiple blood clots.

Her condition’s severity forced her to self-advocate in an attempt to seek appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Ultimately, however, Serena survived the nightmare and lived to love her daughter.
