Two-time Wimbledon champion and world no.9 Petra Kvitova easily dispatched Aliaksandra Sasnovich in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Though the scoreline reads that she cruised through the match, it wasn’t smooth sailing for her at all. But what was it that irked her, even though she won her match at Wimbledon? Not only Kvitova, but Sasnovich too had a tough time dealing with the number of flies that were swarming around the court and distracting them.
Clearly, it was not an ideal ambiance for a tennis match of such high stakes. Unfortunately, nothing much could be done to stop these flies from being a menace.
It was ‘Hell’, says Petra Kvitova

Kvitova used the word ‘hell’ to describe the number of flies that were distracting her at the tennis court. She said she had complained to the referee, but the referee told her to carry on playing. Kvitova even sprayed repellant on her, but it was of no use. She said that some looked like “flying ants” and others looked like “flies”.
“It didn’t physically feel like it was extra hot. Rather, something else bothered me,” she told iSport.cz, reported by Eurosport. “There were an awful lot of flies everywhere from the beginning. It was hell.”
One has to hope that nothing like this happens in the future, otherwise it will become a very bothersome situation for everyone-the players, audience and the tournament organizers.
Yet another issue that Kvitova took offense with is the scheduling of the matches at Wimbledon this time around. It was quite irritating for her and other players due to the sporadic rains.
Irregular scheduling of the matches irritates Kvitova
One more thing that left Kvitova disgruntled was the scheduling of the matches. Though the Wimbledon organizers defended their actions, it was not at all convincing to many. The situation was quite ridiculous because many players didn’t even complete their first-round matches while other players like the World no.1
Iga Swiatek and Daria Kasatkina were in Round 3.While, apparently, Kvitova was sympathetic to the plight of her fellow players, some players chose to accept it as part of the nature of the sport and especially Wimbledon. For instance, Medvedev, whose match was also delayed, took the issue well and bore no grudges. He was just relieved he could play his match and accepted the inevitability of rains in grand slams and moved on.
Do you think we will see many such delays in the upcoming days?
