Pickleball has rapidly gained popularity in the United States. While it offers fun and quick-paced gameplay, it’s not without risks. Dean Houston, a renowned physiotherapist warns of potential injuries while describing the downsides of the game.

The game’s agility demands include frequent lunges, rapid directional changes, and explosive movements. The smaller court, paddle, and net may give the impression of a less intense sport, but the reality is different. Strains, sprains, fractures, and repetitive use injuries like rotator cuff problems and tennis elbow are common among players. The elderly players who play pickleball face additional risks, as falls leading to fractures are not uncommon.

“Here’s a lot of potential injuries actually. Strains, sprains, and fractures are common Believe it or not, because you have there is an elderly age segment that’s playing that has a fall that breaks something especially repetitive use injuries of the shoulder like the rotator cuff or in the elbow and wrist like for tennis elbow. Those are common injuries and other injuries like that happen With quick ballistic movements like lunging forward or lunging to the side, you know, to the hamstring or calf muscle, those are those are possible too,” said Houston in the Podcast.

Thus, these are some of the common things that people who play pickleball can usually go through. It is thus important to know about the injury factor and play responsibly on the court. Interestingly King, who has been a vocal advocate for gender equality also tried her hands on the sport and had her own opinion on it.
