Serena Williams will have to wait a while longer to make her much-awaited return to the circuit. Having suffered an injury setback at Wimbledon 2021, the 39-year-old took time off to recover. Her ardent fans expected the star to return at one of her favorite tournaments – the US Open. However, it was not meant to be. Serena recently announced that she will be skipping the final Grand Slam of the year to recoup fully.

Before Wimbledon, many predicted the 23-time major winner to go deep in the competition. On the contrary, the hallowed grass had other ideas. In the very first round, Serena suffered heartbreak. After taking an early lead in set-1, she slipped and injured her leg. In what was an emotional set of moments that followed, Williams was forced to retire mid-match. As she continues her road to recovery, a familiar face has lent her support.

Billie Jean King wishes Serena Williams a speedy recovery

The hamstring tear forced Serena out of many top-notch tournaments, including the Tokyo Olympics and the Cincinnati Masters. Her agent had also claimed earlier that the former World No.1 was targeting a return at New York, but it turned out to be too soon. Williams, who was last year’s semifinalist, bit off more than she could chew. After consultations with her medical team, the American decided to skip the tournament that she has won 6 times previously.

Responding to the upsetting piece of news, 12-time Grand Slam champion Billie Jean King offered her wishes to the fellow American legend. After the US Open officially announced Serena’s absence, Billie Jean King took no time to extend her sympathies. In a tweet, the 4-time winner at Flushing Meadows said, “Thinking of you Serena Williams, and hoping you are feeling better soon.” It was a great gesture from a great champion.
