The Canadian women’s national Tennis team recently pulled off a historic feat at the latest edition of the premier international team competition that took place in Spain. Heidi El Tabakh led Team Canada, who had only made it to the semifinal round once in 1988, to their first-ever triumphant campaign at the Billie Jean King Cup.

Following their triumph over the four-time winners, Italy, the Canadian team received a tonne of acclaim from the Tennis community. Even the American tennis legend Billie Jean King, after whom the esteemed international women’s team event is named, also shared a heartfelt message for their remarkable achievement.

Finals debutante Canada featured WTA superstars like Leylah Fernandez and Marina Stakusic. The 2021 U.S. Open runner-up, Fernandez, has performed brilliantly throughout the tournament as she bagged four victories for her country, including her win against Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-3 in the championship match at La Cartuja Stadium.

Both Fernandez and Stakusic clinched two crucial wins for their team as they prevailed in the blockbuster finale against Italy, 2-0. Billie Jean King, who rushed to social media to express her enormous excitement at Team Canada’s historic achievement, called for a “parade.” The WTA legend tweeted, “A history-making win deserves a parade or celebration in Team Canada’s honor! 🇨🇦”

The Canadian women’s national tennis team is being lauded by several prominent figures from both circuits. Even on the men’s tour, the likes of Denis Shapovalov and Milos Raonic are singing praise for their counterparts.

Felicitations poured in on social media from their male counterparts on the tour, Denis Shapovalov and Milos Raonic. The world No. 10 player, Shapovalov, also rushed to Twitter to open up about how he is “pumped” for the women’s national tennis team’s maiden triumph. He said, “So pumped for Team Canada winning @BJKCup for the first time!!! WORLD CHAMPIONS!! “

Even the former world No. 3, Milos Raonic, is “beyond proud,” as he also joined the others to heap praise and admiration on the Canada Billie Jean King Cup team. He tweeted, “Congrats on winning the Billie Jean King cup!! Beyond proud!!!”
