Serena Williams made a comeback in the grass-based tournaments, one of the most successful surfaces for her. However, being away from the circuit for almost a year affected her gameplay.

The 23 times Grand Slam champion, after playing doubles, took part in singles of the Wimbledon Championship. Though she was riding high on fans’ hope, Williams couldn’t sustain herself till the second round. Even so, she is happy with what she has achieved.
How was the match beneficial for Serena Williams?
Williams, while speaking to the press post her first-round clash, spoke about her experience of playing after so long. She addressed the things that have changed in her playing style. And said, “You know I was really out there and I was doing what I could do. And I was calm, you know, ish for me and I wasn’t angry and that was a huge win for me.”
“Biggest one ever, and I didn’t smash any rackets.” She added. Williams, who took a wild card entry, locked horns with the French tennis professional Harmony Tan in the first round of the tournament. Although she was meeting Tan for the first time, the stats favoured the former World No.1 by a lot.

The French ace has participated in tournaments since the start of this season. As such, the lack of touch with her game played against Williams. The 40-year-old, after losing the first set by 5-7, revived herself in second and snatched the set from Tan by 6-1. Thereafter, she fought tooth and nail in the third, but the match favoured her rival and she lost the set 6 (7)-7 (10).

The American tennis legend had a lot at stake in this year’s Wimbledon Championship. First being her making a comeback amidst the rumors of retirement. The seven times Wimbledon champion would have been able to put the talks of her retirement to sleep if she managed to produce a noteworthy run this season. Instead, she has fueled the same by taking a first round exit.

Second, Serena Williams was just two matches away from securing the record of 100 victories on the grass courts of Wimbledon. Thus, she could have become the only female player after Martina Navratilova to touch the milestone in the greens of London. Now she will have to wait till the next year to achieve the record.
