Best Friends for Decades, Serena Williams’ Childhood Coach Reveals Why He and Richard Williams Had a Gap in Friendship

What many people would associate with Serena Williams and Venus Williams is the greatness and success that they achieved on the tennis courts. However, long behind this lies years of hard work, dedication, and a team that gave in their everything to make sure that they reached the heights that they deserved. During the early years of their career, their team majorly comprised their father Richard Williams and their childhood coach Rick Macci.

The two had a great bond and were the rock behind the massive success of the Williams sisters. Reflecting on the same, Rick Macci talked about the bond that he had with their father while talking about how the two got connected yet again after not being in contact for years.

In a recent ES Fancast exclusive interview, Rick Macci shared stories about his friendship with Richard Williams, the dad of Serena and Venus Williams. Even though the two didn’t talk much for a while, Macci remembers how close they were. Macci said Richard remembers everything, even things that are not shown in the movie about their friendship.

He also talked about the early days, when Macci saw the potential of the Williams sisters, and said that they would achieve a legendary status even before they made their mark in tennis. There was a time when it was Macci and Williams against the world as they thought of making the sisters, the best in the world.

“What’s crazy is Richard uh even though he’s had some health problems he remembers everything all the stories that really weren’t in the movie um but we were best friends you got to understand it was kind of like me and him against the world back then,” said Macci in the interview.

However, their contact lessened during the girls’ active tennis tours due to Williams coaching them. But, their connection was brought back to life when the movie was produced. As they worked on it, they started talking more. Once the movie came out, their friendship grew strong again.

“For a long time we didn’t have a lot of contact when the girls were on the tour you know when he was coaching them so really more towards the movie we started uh getting more back in touch and then when the movie came out um bang it’s just like uh we we never disconnected whatsoever but the best father ever,” Macci further continued while shedding light on how they reconnected after a long time.

Macci praised Richard as an amazing dad and highlighted their reconnection, built on their shared past and memories. Their bond became strong again thanks to the production of the movie. They shared a great stage together and enjoyed the journey they went through together while supporting the Williams sisters’ dreams.
