So, tennis life can be rough, right? But some good news is always welcome! Angelique Kerber would surely agree! Remember when she stepped back from the tour last August after two decades of pro play? It wasn’t without facing her share of ups and downs though! Back from maternity leave after her daughter, Liana’s birth, the three-time Grand Slam champ retired as the 2024 Paris Olympics concluded, closing her career with a smile.
In her heartfelt IG post in August 2024, she expressed her bittersweet dilemma, saying, “The finish line. Before the @Olympics begin, I can already say that I will never forget #Paris2024, because it will be my last professional tournament as a tennis player. And whereas this might actually be the right decision, it will never feel that way.” Her words reflect not only her love for tennis but also the bittersweet nature of saying goodbye.
But in more, Angelique is expecting her second child! She hinted at the joy on Instagram on Thursday with a picture of her cuddling Liana, a red heart emoji strategically placed over her belly. The caption read, “Counting down the days for someone special to arrive in our family ❤️🍼🐣🫶.” This announcement delighted fans and former colleagues alike.

Another thing to point out is that with the stress of the tennis tour behind her, Angelique now has more time for motherhood. After returning from her maternity leave in 2024, she found it difficult to bounce back to the position she once held in the sport. During her career, she won 14 titles, including major ones at the 2018 Wimbledon and 2016 Australian Open and US Open. However, she hadn’t won a title since 2022 in Strasbourg. So how does she feel about this new chapter?
Kerber admits to not missing tennis as much post-retirement!
Angelique Kerber wrapped up her tennis career with a big celebration in the Olympic Village after her last match on July 31, 2024. Since then, she’s been diving into life beyond the court, but how is she adjusting to retirement? In a September 2024 interview with Tennis Channel DE, she shared, “I haven’t had much time to think about whether I miss tennis. I continue to do my sport, but I don’t have much free time.” Instead of focusing on the tour, Kerber is relishing quality time with family and friends—something often sidelined during her professional career.

After giving birth to her daughter Liana in February 2023, Kerber made a triumphant return to tennis in December 2023, helping the German team win the United Cup alongside stars like Alexander Zverev and Laura Siegemund. Just two months post-retirement, she made a special appearance at the Laver Cup 2024 in Berlin, where she remarked, “This time I’m not here as a player, but as a spectator. It’s different, but special.”
With three Grand Slam titles and a remarkable 29 weeks at number one under her belt, Kerber remains the most successful German tennis player since Steffi Graf. She emphasized her commitment to staying connected to tennis, saying, “I always said that I would stay true to tennis.” Now as she transitions from being a tennis mom to a mom of two, it’s exciting to see what new chapters await this beloved German star!
