Alexis Ohanian on why he chose to invest in women’s soccer

Alexis Ohanian argues that the old paradigm of women’s sports is no longer valid. Women’s soccer has attracted numerous fans and has achieved great success in recent years. American football has seen an intolerant cycle for women’s sports where low investment damages reputation and hinders interest, which then makes forthcoming investments less likely.

Alexis Ohanian said, “Women’s soccer, in particular, I believed was tremendously under-resourced, under-marketed, undervalued, underappreciated, under-supported, the list goes on.”

There is no disputing the fact that women’s sports is treated differently than men’s sports. Investors are reluctant to invest in them from the media and companies as they are sceptical about their subsequent rewards. With Ohanian investing in women, the rest of his family have followed suit, as both Serena Williams and Ohanian’s daughter, Olympia, have become part owners of the soccer club.

Ohanian further explained his reasons for investing in the soccer club. He said, “I saw it first and foremost as a tremendous business opportunity. My north star here is quite simply that this is something that was so obviously good of an investment and I feel great all this other stuff has come from it.”

By including Olympia in the investors circle, Ohanian made his daughter the youngest owner of a professional sports team. Notably, Ohanian inspiration to invest in women’s sports came after witnessing the USWNT players lifting the world cup and the subsequent thought of Olympia donning the famous jersey of the United States Women’s soccer team in the future.

People love to watch Olympia play different games with her parents, as both Serena and Alexis’ social media accounts have plenty of videos and pictures of such moments. She already has a loyal fan base.

The 5-year-old couldn’t help but step onto the field after watching a match of her club, the Angel City FC. In addition to soccer, Olympia has also showcased her skills with a tennis racquet during a practice session with her mother, Serena Williams. It is safe to say that Olympia will inevitably step into the sporting world in the future. The only question is, will she take up tennis like her mother or choose another sport like soccer?
