With a Grand Slam title now under her belt, Coco Gauff has undoubtedly become a formidable competitor on the women’s tour. However, it wasn’t an easy journey for the 19-year-old who was struggling in the initial phase of this season, having faced initial round defeats and some subpar performances at major tournaments.
But things changed for the tennis prodigy after she teamed up with the renowned coach, Brad Gilbert, during the hard court season. Though he has helped his young compatriot win her maiden major title, the 62-year-old himself has been struggling with a serious health issue. In his battle against the life-threatening disease, the American tennis coach recently shared a promising update on social media.

The former tennis player, now a coach and commentator, has helped some of the youngest tennis stars, including Gauff, reach the topmost echelons of the sport. But while ardently keeping up with his coaching stints, Brad Gilbert has kept his personal life away from the public lens. But the 62-year-old has now finally opened up about his health and his battle against the deadly skin disease, melanoma.

Gilbert posted a series of Tweets, informing his followers that he recently underwent “Mohs surgery” as a preventive measure. He tweeted, “Not looking 👀 forward to 9am 🕘 Mohs surgery on my neck, the Sun 🌞 is definitely 💯 a tough opponent, if you are a regular tennis 🎾 player or in the Sun ☀️ a lot, get yearly checkups with a dermatologist”.
After undergoing the surgery, Gilbert shared another update, “1st cut done ✔️ now the 60-90 mins wait from the lab 🧪 results, to see if more cutting needed, or stitch 🧵 me up ⬆️ and early finish 🙏😎”

Despite struggling with his disease, the American coach has done a fantastic job of guiding Gauff to a number of triumphs during the hard court season. The end of the year run has certainly been made memorable by the changes to the reigning US Open champion’s team.

The entire tennis realm was taken aback by the 19-year-old who took her game to the next level during the American hardcourt swing. Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka, the current top two players on the tour, both have tasted defeats at the hands of their American colleague, Coco Gauff.
In the process of overcoming her fierce foes, the tennis prodigy has already clinched three WTA singles titles under Gilbert’s tutelage. Apart from her home Grand Slam event, the US Open, the new World No. 3 player also enjoyed triumphant runs at both the Cincinnati and Citi Open tournaments.
