Krejcikova's comeback at Wimbledon—proof that hard work pays off or just a lucky break?

Czechia’s Barbora Krejcikova is blazing her way through the grass. After winning the Roland Garros trophy in 2021, Krejcikova has returned to bag another major title but on British soil. Despite leaving the crowds awestruck with her performance, this Czech player’s journey to the top wasn’t smooth. Mentioning how she “didn’t have any wins” under her belt before Wimbledon, Barbora Krejcikova shows why she is an indomitable candidate for the Grand Slam.

Krejcikova opened up about her struggles throughout the season before entering Wimbledon’s finals against Jasmine Paolini in a Tennis Channel podcast. When the host asked this Czech player about her preparations to reach the Grand Slam final, Krejcikova said that she didn’t really do anything special. However, she delved into how her challenges before Wimbledon motivated her to achieve this feat.”I stayed the season very well, then I got injured. Then I was about to come back in Miami but I got ill and then it was on and off.”

“You know I was just coming back all the time and it was difficult because I didn’t have any wins under my belt. So I was going through really, really difficult period but I don’t know. Now I am here and I am gonna be playing finals on Saturday and I don’t know how that happened,” she said.

Krejcikova managed to win only three matches in the last five months before Wimbledon. Of those three victories, two were from the Birmingham Open in June. This Czech player reached the Australian Open’s quarterfinals but then lost to Aryna Sabalenka. Krejcikova also entered the Abu Dhabi Open’s quarterfinals before losing against Liudmila Samsonova. She suffered from back problems and multiple illnesses after the Melbourne major which impacted her consistency this season.

However, taking motivation from that Krejcikova showed that she is not a person who accepts defeat very easily. Despite challenges, she showed her brilliance entering the Melbourne Open’s finals this time. While her performance is awe-inducing, this WTA star also revealed how the entire experience was nothing less than a surprise for her.

Despite reaching the final, Krejcikova was not sure about it since she lost six of the eight singles matches she played before the British Grand Slam. While her start to the major was moderate, she soon gained her confidence after defeating a talented player like Elena Rybakina in the semifinals. Post-victory, Krejcikova expressed the same amusement about her performance. “I have had many difficult periods this year, I mean, I never really imagined four weeks ago that I could reach a Wimbledon final, that I can be a different player,” she said.
