Coco Gauff's stardom is skyrocketing—Is she the future face of women's tennis?

Just a couple of days ago, Coco Gauff was spending time with her family at the New Balance headquarters in Boston. While still getting used to her first signature tennis shoe, it was time to start planning for a second version: Coco CG2. “I’m excited to see what people think of the evolution of this shoe,” she declared of the Aug. 21 release of the first colorway. While Gauff rises to become “an evolution, not a revolution”, her NY fans are already crazy about her, and she’s blown away.

Last year, Gauff adorned the CG1 collection at the US Open, where she eventually grabbed her maiden Grand Slam title. Fast-forward to 2024, where Gauff’s Olympic dismay, coupled with early exits from Wimbledon, Canada, and Cincinnati, has compelled her to “reset” her form. With US Open looming, she kicked off her journey with Coco’s Court pop-up event on August 23 and 24! The defending champ showed off her new CG2 shoes at a NYC event. She was shocked to see a huge line of fans waiting for them and posted a video on her Instagram Story.

The words on the post read, “This is actually insane. This was the line to get into my pop up at the @newbalance store🥲 thank you thank you thank you😭❤️ for supporting #CocosCourt, genuinely was not expecting this,” perfectly depicting her amazement at her rising fandom.

The initial colorway, ‘Power and Grace,’—one inspired New York City, features an oxidized blue for the Statue of Liberty and a 30 Watt shade for the city lights. “New York has always been special to me, but even more now after winning my first major there,” Gauff said.

Furthermore, the collar, tongue, and heel of the shoe draw inspiration from the intricate geometric patterns seen in the architectural marvels of Paris. Meanwhile, the back of the shoe proudly displays a trophy. Gauff’s signature shines on the shoes’ tongues and left heel, while the right heel features the number “two”, representing feminine grace and powerful elegance, per New Balance.

“I had as much fun designing and collaborating on the Coco CG2. My relationship with the New Balance team is incredible…” said Gauff. Speaking about their priorities at the moment, the New Balance head of tennis sports marketing also shared, “There’s no pressure for Coco to wear the CG2 at the US Open. For us, the approach will always be how can Coco feel the best and most confident on court..”
