Liudmila Samsonova, seeded 13th, kicks off her Australian Open 2024 against Amanda Anisimova on Sunday, January 14. After a challenging period post her runner-up finish at Abu Dhabi in February last year, the Russian found her stride in the latter half, making quarterfinal appearances during the grass season and an impressive run at the WTA 1000 event in Montreal.

Currently ranked 14th globally, just two spots away from her career-best, Samsonova’s form has been inconsistent this year, facing early exits in Brisbane and Adelaide. On the other hand, her opponent, Amanda Anisimova returns to the Australian Open with a special ranking after an indefinite break due to burnout.

Despite a recent win against Pavlyuchenkova at the ASB Classic, Anisimova faced a setback against Bouzkova. Ranked 339th currently in the WTA rankings, she targets a strong showing in a Slam where she reached the last 16 in 2019 and 2022
