What’s better than having your loved ones by your side through life’s ups and downs? For Coco Gauff, that support is unmatched. The American tennis sensation has been on an incredible roll lately, closing out a phenomenal season with a victory at the WTA Finals in Riyadh. And as she kicked off the new year at the United Cup, she didn’t miss a beat—clinching the title alongside Team USA and carrying her momentum into the Australian Open.

But behind every forehand winner and match point saved is Gauff’s ever-supporting father, who has been one of her biggest cheerleaders through every triumph and trial.  So, what about his presence during her ongoing Australian Open campaign? Coco’s father, Corey traveled to Australia with his entire family as was evidenced by the Christmas celebrations where Gauff was seen with her parents and siblings. But despite traveling to Australia, he did not appear in Gauff’s box during the United Cup.

And while it is not known if Corey Gauff also traveled to Melbourne, one thing is certain: he will not be seen in his daughter’s box. But why Revealing the same during the Australian Open last year, Gauff shared, “Sometimes my dad says some words that I can’t say right here. And then I hear them and I get mad. We agreed he can go say them somewhere else around here.”

Notably, it was also during his absence when Gauff clinched the US Open title in 2023, and that has also made her father superstitious. “I’m not superstitious at all, he’s incredibly superstitious. Wimbledon was probably the last time I’ll ever see him in my box. I don’t think he’s ever coming back,” Gauff shared in her interview.

The American tennis sensation has been on a stellar run in Australia this year. She has qualified for the quarterfinals of the tournament where she will be facing Paula Badosa on Tuesday. Interestingly, she did not drop a single set throughout the competition except for her previous match against Belinda Bencic, where she struggled in the first set. And while the star player gets support from their parents when it comes to her father Corey Gauff, he is likely to remain absent in her box. However, this superstitious trait only reflects on his love for his daughter.

Speaking about her bond with her father, Gauff shared that he is even ready to be the bad guy in front of the world. “I’m getting older, having to make more decisions, all of that, on and off court,” she shared. But Corey is always there to shoulder the blame for his daughter if it is a tough call to make. Gauff added: “My dad naturally – not protective, not even make decisions, but naturally he’ll just be protective and be like, I can say no for you if you want me to. Or, I can always be the bad guy.” Continuing further, she expressed her immense admiration for him.

“Whenever he needs to be the bad guy, he’ll just be like, Blame it on me. He doesn’t really care what people think about him. I always appreciate having, like, him by my side. Because me, I’m also in the position I probably can’t be as assertive as him just because of me,” the 20-year-old added. Now, with Gauff earning more accolades, it will be interesting to see if Corey Gauff will break his superstition and return to his daughter’s box to see her play.
