The traditional format of tennis has seen very little change ever since its establishment in the 19th century. However, Serena Williams‘ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, is keen to bring some radical innovations to the sport as he believes these will better suit the current generation. His ideas and beliefs were quite evident when he launched the Ultimate Tennis Showdown, a few seasons back. This year’s UTS is currently taking place in Los Angeles, with many renowned names participating in the unique tennis tourney.
The 53-year-old coach previously came up with the idea of the revolutionary tennis league, which had a much shorter, action-packed format than the traditional one. Now, once again, the legendary French coach has made a radical demand over wanting a new tour for a younger fanbase as he promotes his tennis league. Let’s find out here.

In an interview with Vogue, the French coach acknowledged that there is a considerable generation gap in the tennis community. It is because of the modifications brought on by the quick uptake of social media, streaming services, and video games. Taking note of the same, Patrick Mouratoglou asserted that he is keen to adapt to these changes as it will better suit the current generation.
But it has been quite challenging as there is a fan base of the older generation that is extremely conservative and traditional. So, they get irked by any idea of bringing any radical change to the format of the game. Hence, Mouratoglou has once again come up with another revolutionary concept of launching a new tour in order to entice a younger fan base.
He said, “So I think it’s best to have two different tours—one for traditional tennis fans, and one to bring new fans on board. I think the ATP and WTA want to see what that looks like, but maybe in the future we can partner with them.”
During the conversation, the legendary tennis coach also talked about another radical idea of ‘trash talking’ being supported by a lot of young players.

During the interview, the French tennis coach made his stance clear that he wants the current generation of players to be much more expressive during their matches. Mouratoglou believes that players venting their emotions on the court will connect to the audience in a much better way. However, the tennis coach also asserted that he doesn’t want anybody insulting each other or doing certain things that are banned in the game.
Mouratoglou said, “We don’t want anybody insulting anyone or doing anything dangerous—this is banned—but anything else: trash talking, breaking your racket, whatever.”
