“When people say that she will be the next Serena, it seems like a leap too high,” said Serena Williams‘ childhood coach Rick Macci on Coco Gauff last year, following her US Open victory. Coco may have proved herself this season, but she’s still got a long way to go. At least when it comes to touching her idol, Serena’s accomplishments. Especially in terms of dominating the Grand Slams. On the other hand, World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka seems to be getting close to the Amercian’s perfection. But how?
For the unversed, former WTA star and 23-Grand Slam winner is known for various milestones in her 26-year-old career. However, Serena’s 2015 season is still considered one of her finest. Why? Well, how can you define a win percentage of 96.2 across four Grand Slams in a calendar?
Nine years ago, Serena was on a roll, winning three successive major trophies: the Australian Open, the French Open, and the Wimbledon. She only failed at the US Open, where she was eliminated in the SF round. However, her overall singles record of 26-1 (96.2 percent) across the four Majors is something to marvel at. While Coco Gauff came close to it this season, she was still miles away. But her on-court rival and World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka has nearly matched it!

According to OptaAce’s latest update on X, dated December 10, Aryna Sabalenka had a better win percentage at the Grand Slams in 2024. Out of her 19 singles across the Australian Open, French Open, and the US Open, the Tiger won 18. It translates to 94.7 percent of win percentage. Out of the three events, she emerged victorious in Australia and at the Flushing Meadows. For those wondering about her Wimbledon campaign, she withdrew from it due to a shoulder injury.
94.7 – Aryna Sabalenka registered a win rate of 94.7% in women’s singles at Grand Slams during the 2024 season, it is the best win rate at such events since Serena Williams in 2015 (96.2% – min. 10 matches played). Force. @WTA @WTA_insider pic.twitter.com/uf7FvPlWuM

Now speaking of Gauff, she performed well this season but didn’t come close to Sabalenka’s stats. Out of her 21 Grand Slam singles in 2024, she won 17 while getting a win percentage of 80.9 – way lower than Aryna. However, some of the analysts still believe that Coco has the potential to come back strongly against Sabalenka. Especially when it comes to their rivalry in 2025.
Tennis insider backs Coco Gauff for a rematch against Aryna Sabalenka in 2025
In an episode of the AO Show Weekly podcast, analysts Levi Huddleston and former New Zealand player Simon Rea were discussing Gauff’s 2024 season. Levi specifically highlighted, “I would say that when they met at the US Open, you know Coco Gauff hit 19 double faults. So like, I think, Coco, now that she is making some improvement on that serve, perhaps it will be a different match if we see them play again.”

“So there’s a lot of room for her to improve on that serve. I think she has, so I think it would be really exciting to see what that matchup looks like at the AO,” he added. He simply wanted to imply that Coco will give a tough fight to Aryna Sabalenka in the next season, starting with the Australian Open. In 2024, they both met in the SF round of the tournament where the Belarusian beat Coco 7-6, 6-4.
This time, it will be intriguing to see if Coco will be able to take her revenge. But the momentum should be on her side, given her victory against Aryna before the end of this season. They met during last month’s WTA Finals in the SF round where the American outshined the two-time Grand Slam winner and took the match 7-6, 6-3. Not to mention she went on to clinch the title in Riyadh and became the first American since Serena Williams, in a decade, to win the season finale.
