Sabalenka closed a 69-point gap with Swiatek after her victory at the Wuhan Open on October 13. When the rankings were updated on October 21, she took the lead by 41 points. Swiatek dropped in the rankings due to point deductions for missing mandatory tournaments, having only participated in two of the required six WTA 500 events.
