Born on December 31, 2001, to Anna and Andrey Volynets, Katie Volynets calls Walnut Creek, California, her birthplace. But her parents are originally from Ukraine. Although she learned English later at school, Katie is fluent in Russian and calls it her first language. Volynets’ extended family lives in Ukraine, which she often visits, the last time being after her Wimbledon in 2021.

“I have a lot of cousins in Ukraine, and actually they watch every single match. They usually write me, and I communicate with them. It’s really special”, she said in an interview.

During the difficult times that prevailed in Ukraine, Volynets openly supported and expressed her deep concern about the matter and further said, “I really feel for them. To have their support through all of this is incredible. Whenever I come out on the courts, I hope I’m supporting them as well because they’re watching, and I stay strong for them.”
