Injuries are part and parcel of sports. Anna Kalinskaya knows that all too well. The Russian tennis star was very close to securing her 1st singles title at the Singapore Open. However, an injury was again a roadblock against her as she was forced to withdraw from her semi-final match against Ann Li. Fans are now raising eyebrows at her frequent withdrawals and health issues. What do they have to say?
The World No.14 was the top seed at the Singapore Open. However, the unseeded player, the World No.85 Ann Li, posed a significant challenge to her. The American clinched the first set 6-7 in 57 minutes after which Kalinskaya took an MTO. She received courtside treatment on her right thigh, before retiring from the match after losing the first game in the second set.
Even in the earlier rounds of the Singapore Open, the 26-year-old was seen struggling with injuries as she took an MTO against Caroline Dolehide during a three-setter. Kalinskaya’s withdrawal paves the way for Li to make it to the finals where she will either face China’s Wang Xinyu or Belgium’s Elise Mertens on February 2.

Kalinskaya had recently withdrawn from the Australian Open citing a viral infection. During the Adelaide International, she retired from her match against Belinda Bencic supposedly due to a heatstroke. Even last season, the 26-year-old reached the last 16 of the Miami Open but pulled out before her match against Maria Sakkari due to a hip injury.

Some fans also suspect that the injuries are not real. A netizen wrote, “I guess MTO didn’t disturb her opponent’s momentum this time. Her next step is retirement. Faker!” Another one echoed, “Anna is fake and unserious! Every time she’s lose have injuries! She is pathetic…” Some fans compared Kalinskaya to British tennis star Emma Raducanu, who is also finding it difficult to maintain her form amidst injuries.
One fan wrote, “Kalinskaya is the Queen 👸🏻 of @WTA MTOs & Retirements! 🤯 and as a very close runner-up we have Raducanu!”
Emma Raducanu had a historic run at the US Open in 2021 where she clinched the title as a qualifier. However, the 22-year-old has struggled to replicate that ever since. She underwent surgeries on both her wrists and one ankle and was absent for most of the 2023 season. Raducanu made a comeback in 2024 but still had to withdraw from WTA 1000 tournaments in Dubai and Miami. The World No.56 sustained a foot injury during the Korea Open, sidelining her for the rest of the Asian swing. The former US Open champion was also present at the Singapore Open but unfortunately lost in the first round itself.
