“The scoreline was obviously quite harsh,” said Emma Raducanu after crashing out of the 2025 Australian Open. Playing Iga Swiatek in the third round, she had nowhere to go. The former World No.1 dominated her in a one-sided battle. The scoreline of 6-1, 6-0 in favor of Swiatek pretty much tells the entire story. After coming back from an injury-ridden 2024, Raducanu looked promising down under until she faced Swiatek. As if her exit from AO wasn’t disappointing enough, an update on her coach has further escalated her troubles. And, Serena Williams’ childhood coach has now expressed an unfiltered opinion on Raducanu. What did he say?
For the unversed, Raducanu’s ex-coach Nick Cavaday announced his split with the Briton last week. After her third-round loss at the Australian Open, Cavaday said, “I am very happy to have been able to work with Emma over the last 14 months. At this moment in time, it’s important for me to spend some more time at home and prioritize getting back to full health, which is hard to do with the extensive calendar.”
Rick Macci, who’s a Hall of Famer, took to X on Friday and shared his views on Raducanu’s situation. He wrote, “She is too talented and proven not to be one of best in the world. Unless you know what is inside the players head and if there is a burning desire it is hard to speculate.” Highlighting her problem of frequently switching coaches, Macci added, “She has more coaches the past 4 years than titles” and that’s why “maybe she should hire Emma to coach Emma. @EmmaRaducanu”

Macci’s take on the Brit came a day after he put up another post on Raducanu. Talking about who she should hire next he wrote, “She needs the right quarterback that understands the mental game and bulletproof confidence.”
Well, Macci’s remarks have come at an interesting time. Why so? Recently, rumors have been floating regarding Raducanu’s potential new coach. He happens to be her compatriot and 24-time Major winner Novak Djokovic’s current trainer.
Emma Raducanu rumored to join forces with Andy Murray
Former ATP pro and three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray partnered with Novak Djokovic last November. Ahead of the Australian Open, the Serbian decided to have the Scot as his trainer. But the association was for a trial period. He wanted to see how this partnership would turn out during the Major down under. Unfortunately, Djokovic had to withdraw mid-way through the semi-final in Melbourne last week due to a muscular tear. Simply put, now there are clouds of uncertainty looming over their collaboration. An update is, however, still awaited.

Speaking of the possibility of Andy Murray joining Emma Raducanu’s team, he has already expressed his wish to train her on a previous occasion. Back in 2022, talking to Tennis Channel, Murray was asked to name a few players he would like to coach. In his response, the Brit said, “Female player–Emma Raducanu. Male player – between (Carlos) Alcaraz, (Stefanos) Tsitsipas, and (Jack) Draper.”
Not just that, Murray had expressed his admiration for Raducanu when she won her maiden Major title at the US Open in 2021. “It was incredible what she did there,” Murray said before further adding, “I think for a lot of the people involved in British tennis, we knew she was extremely good.”
Only time will tell whether Raducanu’s next coach will be Murray or someone else. But she surely needs a formidable coach. After her elimination from the Melbourne Major, Raducanu couldn’t impress much in the next event in Singapore. Earlier this week, she played Spain’s Cristina Bucsa in the Singapore Open’s first round. Despite leading in the first set, Raducanu failed to hold her grip and eventually lost the match 7-5, 5-7, 5-7.
