America’s 5 Biggest Hopes for a Grand Slam in 2024 ft. Coco Gauff

The 2023 WTA season saw great action, and fans can’t wait for the next season to commence. Specifically, the American players rose to new heights, and some returned from previous slumps. Coco Gauff won her biggest titles of the year, Jessica Pegula improved further, and Madison Keys showed us a glimpse of her old form.

Their efforts, and those of others, did not go unnoticed and have created a lot of hype around them. As they enter the 2024 season, fans are eager to see them play as all of them carry the potential to win a grand slam.

Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff is one player who turned the world upside down after Wimbledon. During the start of the year, Gauff was suffering from poor performances and changed coaches thrice. She entered the year under Diego Moyano, then Patrick Mouratoglou, and finally settled with Pere Riba and Brad Gilbert. She would make the best choice of the two American coaches.

Due to the inclusion of the two in their team, she won her first WTA 500 title, her Masters title, and even her first grand slam in less than two months. She tackled her weaknesses and overcame them quickly. She wouldn’t have any more titles for the rest of the year, but ends 2023 ranked 3.

Now, the 19-year-old will enter the 2024 season with Gilbert, as Riba has moved on to coaching another player. Out of all the players on the list, Gauff has the highest chance of winning a slam, and it could happen as soon as the Australian Open rolls around.  

Jessica Pegula

Gauff’s double partner is another WTA star who has a great chance of winning a slam. She is a late bloomer, as she managed to rise to the top of the WTA in late 2021 at the age of 27. However, she was never demotivated and persevered in the face of all issues. Jessica Pegula entered the year ranked 3 and played some of the best tennis of her life.

She reached the quarterfinal of two slams and the final stages of four Masters. She would go on to win the Canadian Open and would even beat Iga Swiatek, the WTA number 1, on her way to the final. Her efforts even propelled her to the final of the WTA Finals, which she lost. But her improvements this year have set her up for a great next season and have shown that she has the potential to win a slam. 

Madison Keys

Madison Keys is another American WTA star who has the potential to win a slam next year. After a setback that started after the Aussie slam last year, Keys has improved quite a bit and aims to go even higher. This year, she managed to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinal and the US Open semifinal. She entered the year ranked 11 but fell down to 25 by June.

But Keys managed to climb back up to 12 and ends the year in a much better position. She is able to work her magic in the US Open and even bageled Aryna Sabalenka in the first set of their semifinal clash. She lost the match but never relented as the remainder of the two sets went to a tie-break. Keys surprised fans in the American slam. She has a good chance to go even farther with improved strategy and finally win her first slam.

Amanda Anisimova 

Amanda Anisimova is a young American beauty who has grown by leaps and bounds since 2022. She turned pro in 2016 and played her first slam final in 2019. She had a better year in 2022, where she managed to win her second title and managed to climb to rank 23 by the end of the year. However, when April came around the corner, she decided to take a break from the sport, citing struggles with mental health.

Anisimova is currently ranked 368 but managed to enter the Australian Open owing to her protected ranking. She improved immensely in the sport and could act as a dark horse which won the race. Anisimova, if playing at her full potential, has a good chance to win the two slams. 

Danielle Collins

Danielle Collins is another hopeful to win a slam this year. She is 30 years old but still has a lot of tennis to offer. She reached the final in Australia in 2022 but couldn’t go far this year. Her performance suffered a bit, but she earned a title in doubles. Collins has the motivation she needs to play against the best the WTA has to offer and will fight for her right to win.

The five WTA stars will lead the American scene in women’s tennis. Gauff and Pegula have the best chance of bagging the majors, but the others have good potential to surprise us too.
