Amanda Anisimova couldn’t be faulted for cursing her luck. The rising American tennis star traveled to the Saudi Capital to compete in WTA Abu Dhabi, hoping to pick up some wins, the title, and a good head of momentum going into the Australian Open.
However, misfortune struck as she was forced to pull out of the event after testing positive for COVID-19. Worse, she couldn’t return a negative test in time to board the Melbourne-bound chartered flight from Abu Dhabi.
The flight took off barely 24 hours before she was to complete 14 days of mandatory quarantine.

It was a rough 2 weeks, but I’m just happy my family and I are healthy. I’m hoping the Australian Open can continue without many further problems 🙏🏽 if 2020 has taught us anything it’s for everyone to be looking at the bigger picture. https://t.co/YEMgR59dsK

Amanda Anisimova pulled out of WTA Abu Dhabi after testing COVID positive
Though utterly disappointed at having to miss out on the year’s first Grand Slam, the 31st-ranked American seems to have taken the blow on the chin, knowing that there’s sunshine at the end of the long, dark tunnel.
In a clear hint that she is not willing to dwell on the negatives, knowing full well that the season would afford her enough events and opportunities to make up for the disappointment of not playing the Australian Open, Anisimova has shared a positive update on her health on Twitter.
The American has said that she is doing fine and it shouldn’t be long before she is back doing what she does best, which is to play tennis.
“It was a rough two weeks but I’m just happy my family and I are healthy,” Anisimova wrote.
Anisimova narrowly missed her flight to the Australian Open
Anisimova wished that the Australian Open, which has been courting one unsavory headline after another even before it opens, passes off without much trouble.
“I’m hoping the Australian Open can continue without many further problems,” she wrote.
The American added that the most abiding lesson that she learned from her experience with COVID and the setbacks that followed is that it always pays to not be affected by fleeting dark episodes in one’s life as there are bigger and brighter things that lie ahead.
