Will Iga Swiatek's partnership with Wim Fissette lead to triumph or turmoil on the tennis court?

The coaching saga finally came to an end for Iga Swiatek last week. The former World Number 1 announced that Wim Fissette is joining her team, days after her split with ex-coach, Tomasz Wiktorowski. Fissette boasts a formidable CV, having already coached some renowned players like Naomi Osaka. Additionally, Swiatek’s wish was fulfilled as she was looking to hire a foreign coach. Despite Fissette being one of the most sought-after coaches though, a tennis bigwig, Karel Knap, has rung alarm bells for the Polish star.

Knap, who is the head of the tennis department of Canal + Sport in the Czech Republic, revealed that despite so much talk about Swiatek joining hands with Fissette, the new partnership could brew trouble in the future due to egos clashing.

She said, “I hope Iga and her team thought twice or even three times before agreeing to this arrangement. There is always a clash of egos in tennis teams. Fissette will have to adapt to the specific circumstances, that’s for sure. But Iga talked about the future after she chose Wim. So both sides are willing to cooperate. It’s like in any relationship – everyone has to be guided by good will.”

Swiatek, however, is happy to have Fissette on her team. While announcing his arrival, she revealed, “I’m happy to announce that Wim Fissette is joining our team… I want to say that I’m very excited and looking forward to working with Wim.”

The change in Iga Swiatek’s coaching team has been much discussed in the tennis world. While Knap highlighted the potential issues that might occur with the new partnership, Serena Williams’ ex-coach, Rennae Stubbs, backed Swiatek to shine under Fissette.

At 23, Swiatek has already captured 5 Grand Slam titles. Additionally, she dominated the WTA circuit and won several big titles apart from the majors. Further, with the addition of a top coach in her ranks in the form of Fissette, Rennae Stubbs believes that Swiatek could achieve legendary status under him.

Speaking on the Rennae Stubbs podcast, she said, “I think it’ll go great because Wim will come in with new ideas and fresh ideas, he’s a little bit and not a little bit, he’s a lot more upbeat and a lot more positive than Tomasz [Wiktorowski]. Working with Iga or something ‘cause Iga clearly when she’s on the court, she gets very stressed and all the things you see and you have to be able to monitor that. I think Iga will probably do great and will look like a legend.”

After the US Open, Swiatek took some time off to rejuvenate after some disappointing performances. As a result, she missed the entire Asian Swing. However, the Pole aims to come back stronger at the WTA Finals in Riyadh, with an eye on finishing the year as the World Number 1. Do you think she will be able to do that?
