Markéta Vondroušová is a professional tennis player from the Czech Republic. She has had a career-high ranking of 14, which she achieved in July 2019. Vondroušová finished runner-up at the 2019 French Open, making her the first teenager to reach a Major final in almost a decade. She has one singles title after playing in four finals. She also has a silver medal from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Recently, Vondroušová’s performance has seen a resurgence of her 2019 form. The WTA number 42 has advanced to the finals of the Wimbledon Championships. She will face the world no.6 Ons Jabeur in her bid to lift the Venus Rosewater Dish. Vondroušová’s unexpected run to the final at SW19 has certainly created intrigue about her personal life.  

Markéta Vondroušová’s early life

Markéta Vondroušová was born on June 28, 1999, in Sokolov, a small town in the Czech Republic, sharing its Western border with Germany. She was born to David Vondrouš and Jindika Anderlová. Her parents divorced when the player was just three years old. Despite the split, her mother and father, as well as her stepfather, were a strong presence in her life and encouraged her to pursue a career as a tennis player.

Vondroušová excelled in a plethora of sports when she was young, including skiing, soccer, table tennis, and floorball. She began focusing on tennis early on, attending a national mini-tennis competition on Štvanice Island, Prague, in 2006. Following the event, Vondroušová and her family planned to return to the Island to train at the venue. She trained five days a week during this period, two of which were in Štvanice, a few hours from her hometown.

Meet Marketa Vondroušová’s dather – David Vondrouš

David Vondrouš is the father of Markéta Vondroušová. He was also a tennis player when he was young. However, he was only interested in the game for recreational purposes. Despite not reaching his peak, David has travelled far and wide as a result of his daughter’s tennis prowess. David was the reason Marketa became interested in the sport at the age of four. 

He realized his daughter’s immense potential when it came to sports, and how she could end up being a successful athlete. According to him, he envisioned Markéta playing sports at the greatest level. While she played several sports, she decided to go for tennis in the end, a decision which made her father jubilant.

Meet Marketa Vondroušová’s mother – Jindřiška Anderlová

Jindřiška Anderlová, Markéta Vondroušová’s mother, was another person in the family who played sports. However, unlike David, Jindřiška played professionally at the highest level in Czechia. She played volleyball for SK Slavia Prague in the top-tier Extraliga. Vondroušová’s father believed that his daughter could have played volleyball, which her mother excelled at, but chose tennis instead.

Jindřiška also came from a background in sports. Her father, Marketa’s maternal grandfather, František Frk, was the Czechoslovak national pentathlon champion in 1935. 

Marketa Vondroušová’s parents are her support system

When Markéta was three years old, Jindřiška Anderlová and David Vondrouš went through a divorce. The reason for their divorce was kept private. Despite their split, the former married couple were able to make sure that their divorce had no negative impact on their daughter’s life and career.
