Ohanian was present for the gruesome times of Serena Williams’ post-pregnancy complications.

When he heard Bowie’s news, he vividly remembered the time his wife underwent severe medical complications. Serena kept asking her doctors for a scan, but no one was listening to her at first. But after some tests, they realized that she was right. Her story showed how black mothers do not get the same treatment as others.?

As the news of Tori Bowie made rounds, more people became aware of the problems with the treatment of persons of color when it came to medical care. Bowie died in her home, and she was eight months pregnant. An autopsy conducted revealed that Bowie was in labor when she passed away.

Alexis Ohanian noticed the story and realized that he had seen a similar situation with his wife Serena. He could not help but be outraged about the story. He shared it on his Twitter with a caption that stated the problem. The business magnate wrote, “There is a #BlackMaternalHealthCrisis in America.”

Further reports said that Bowie died due to Eclampsia, which occurs in less than 3% of women with preeclampsia, a high blood pressure disorder in pregnancy. The condition can cause many complications and requires immediate medical care. This brought to light the fact that the former track athlete lacked proper care.?

Serena Williams on the treatment of Black women

In an interview on CBS with Norah O’Donnell, Williams talked about how black women are treated when it comes to medical care. As per her, many mothers who are POC (people of color) have a story that is similar to hers. She wanted to share her story as much as she could because medical schools were teaching their students that black mothers did not need the same care as white mothers.
