The fiercely competitive world of elite sports is undoubtedly glitzy and glamorous. However, an ugly truth lies underneath all the glitz and glamour. It involves a gaping inequality between the remuneration for men and women. Historically, men have benefited far more than women when it comes to financial rewards gained from professional sports. It can be argued that the gap between men and women regarding access to opportunities is closing. Despite that, the fact remains that in terms of remuneration, men still reign supreme. And 23 Grand Slam singles winner Serena Williams is among several prominent global icons who want to change that for good.

Williams recently appeared alongside some high-profile names in a video that celebrated the 10th anniversary of Gucci CHIME. It’s a campaign that fashion giant Gucci started in 2013 and its ultimate goal is to ensure gender equality in every field imaginable.

Professional tennis is one of the most lucrative sports in the world today. However, despite all its financial rewards, the most prominent men’s tennis players still tend to earn much more than their women counterparts. On average, men’s tennis players earn over 30% of what their female counterparts earn.

What makes matters worse is that pro tennis is one of the professions where the pay gap between men and women is among the lowest. So, one can only imagine the gap in other professions. Serena Williams has been vocal about such inequality for long. Now, through her appearance in the Gucci CHIME celebratory video, she confirmed that despite her retirement from tennis in 2022, she is still very much active in her pursuit of equality.

In the video, Williams appears alongside some of the world’s most visible stars such as Julia Roberts and Salma Hayek. During her brief appearance, Williams states, “We chime for opportunity.”

Williams’s firm belief regarding the need for things to change also inspired her husband Alexis Ohanian. In 2019, Ohanian suggested to Williams that their daughter Olympia could go on to represent the US as a soccer player in the future. However, Williams’s reply stunned Ohanian. Williams told her husband that Olympia would only become a soccer player if she got paid her worth. It turned out to be one of the moments that drove Ohanian to invest in Angel City FC.
