Delray Beach, Florida is Coco Gauff‘s safe haven, a city where her domestic fans simply call her “Coco.” This was right after her magical week in Wimbledon (2019) when beach residents didn’t need her good name “Cori” to acknowledge the trailblazer. For them, they were buzzed to the tunes of a rising star who had just swooped in to take the victory from the mighty Venus Williams. For Coco’s father, the reason for her success was plain and simple: “Tennis chose her.”

Coco comes from a family with a sporting background. Gauff’s parents were college athletes and made quite the name for themselves. Her parents were right when they believed that the 19-year-old had a natural alignment for tennis. After all, Serena Williams’ former coach, Rick Macci, too recognizes the great genetics she honorably justifies on the court.

Coco Gauff’s new athletic abilities as visibly evident at the US Open finals have impressed many who watched her play. It also caught the attention of Rick Macci, the former coach of the Williams sisters. Extremely happy at her achievements, he praised her and her parents on X for landing the genetic jackpot.

@CocoGauff and her dad knows this is only the start. Having an extremely athletic family Cori and Candi hit the GENETEC JACKPOT with Coco. Champions know everything has to get ALOT better.

“When the season is Done hopefully THE ATP forehand has just Begun. New weapon in the oven.”

Rick Macci once described Coco Gauff as “a track star that has a tennis racquet in her hand.” When asked about her response to Macci’s comment after she Gauff responded to this after she qualified for the the Western & Southern Open semifinals without dropping a set this year, she revisited the old days when she was just a budding track athlete. Accepting that Alycia Parks and Iga Switak will be strong competitors, she was ready to take up the challenge, and said,

I would be curious to test it, to be honest! I do feel like I am the fastest mover, to be honest. I’d be really interested.

Macci wasn’t wrong with his presumption about young Gauff. After all, nimble-footed Gauff gets her track and field talents from Mama Gauff, Candi, who once competed in that field for Florida State University. Papa Gauff, Corey, played college basketball at Georgia State University. While Macci is lauding Gauff for her genetics, she is not the only one in her family to be able to reach a good level in a sport.
