Jessica Pegula secured the second WTA 1000 title of her career after she won the Canadian Open. Playing against Liudmila Samsonova in the final, Pegula cruised to a straight-set victory. After the match, the DJ in the stadium decided that some humor was needed for the celebration. Following her win, a song played, which prompted the audience, along with Pegula, to laugh immensely.

The song played reminded Pegula of a daunting moment in the semifinal. The same song was played during a rally with Iga Swiatek, which was followed by consecutive points lost by the American.

The final of the Canadian Open did not last long. The world number 3 won the final match in 49 minutes, making quick work of her opponent. Jessica Pegula demolished Samsonova 6-1, 6-0.

A great moment of victory for Pegula found itself enhanced by the music that played after the last point. Cotton Eye Joe by Rednex played as Pegula sat down for a brief rest and evoked a chuckle from her. It was a moment of irony as the last time the song played, Pegula was in much trouble.

Later, during the post-match press conference, she said, “I just learned it was his idea, when I won, to play it again, which is hilarious. But, uh, I mean, yesterday, I just couldn’t believe it was actually happening. I was like, ‘Where are we right now?’ Why, of all songs? I don’t think I heard it the whole week, and it just came on in the middle of the match at a really important point.”

She further said, “So, it’s interesting. I come to learn I lost a lot of points consecutively when ‘Cotton Eye Joe’ came on. So, I’m glad I got over the Cotton Eye Joe Jinx or whatever you wanna call it and was able to overcome that. So today, it was just funny after I won because it was almost my downfall yesterday, but not anymore.

Previously, Cotton Eye Joe played when Pegula and Swiatek were in between a rally. The point was replayed, but it proved to be disastrous for the American.

How Pegula almost lost the semifinal

Up by a set and leading 4-3 in the second set tiebreaker, Pegula aimed to be the victor in straight sets. But her match was briefly disrupted as Cotton Eye Joe was blasted on the speakers during a rally. Called let by the umpire, the point was replayed. However, it disrupted Pegula’s rhythm as she lost 12 points consecutively after the song played.

But the number 3 regained her form in time and won against Swiatek and also went on to win the final. While she did win the tournament, Pegula has all the reasons to disdain the upbeat song.
