King took to Twitter on the completion of 39 years of her victory in the grass courts of the Edgbaston Cup and revealed the importance of the title in her career. She wrote, “39 years ago today, on June 12, 1983, I won the Women’s Singles Final at the Edgbaston Cup & the Maud Watson cup, a truly treasured prize.”

Maud Watson, the British tennis professional after claiming the title for the first time in 1884, successfully defended her crown in 1885 at the green courts of Wimbledon. However, her magnificent career started marching towards its end because of a wrist injury. Even so, Watson managed to bid farewell to her career by winning her last tournament in all three categories.
