Well, the conference lasted over 10 minutes, but the most important bit was the initial couple of minutes. A journalist asked Williams about Ukrainian players and the ongoing war with Russia ahead of her first-round encounter against Elina Svitolina.
The five-time Wimbledon winner said, “War is a nightmare. So all we can do is pray for it to end quickly. I can’t even imagine what it’s like at all.”
This was also the first instance of Williams speaking about the war. She hasn’t played much tennis in the last couple of years, so it’s not surprising that the question was brought up so late. She will be taking on the Ukrainian star Elina Svitolina in her opening fixture at Wimbledon and fans expect it to be a blockbuster.

Venus Williams has barely won any matches in 2023, but the three-set win over Camila Giorgi will do her confidence a world of good. Moreover, she also managed to push the Birmingham Open champion Jelena Ostapenko to three sets. So, there are a few positives for the former world number 1.
Svitolina, on the other hand, was off to a slow start to the season after coming back from pregnancy. However, she found her form late into the clay swing by winning a title in Strasbourg and making the Roland Garros quarterfinals. But, Svitolina did not play enough lead-ups on grass and suffered a comprehensive defeat against Linda Fruhvirtova in Birmingham, which was also her only grass court match of the season.
