After reaching the French Open final last year, Sofia Kenin hasn’t shown her top game. Moreover, due to stringent regulations, she even withdrew from the ongoing Tokyo Olympics. In addition to that, the American No. 1 now announced that she would not be participating in San Jose next week, citing a minor foot injury.

Taking to Twitter, Sofia stated that she is disappointed to not play this year in the WTA Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic 2021. However, she insisted that she required time to recover and hopes to play next summer.

Sofia Kenin withdraws from the 2021 Silicon Valley Classic due to a foot injury

In the video, Kenin mentioned that the foot injury is “nothing bad.” Even so, as a professional athlete, she will need to address the ailment with rest.

“Unfortunately I have to withdraw from the tournament in San Jose next week. I’ve suffered a minor setback with an injury to my foot and will need to take an extra week to recover. I want to thank the tournament for inviting me and I hope to play next summer! Kenin said.

Notably, the Silicon Valley Classic is celebrating its 50th anniversary on the professional tour this year. But as per numbers, it is the tournament’s 49th edition as it got cancelled in 1978 and 2020.

Additionally, due to Kenin’s withdrawal, WTA World No. 17 Elise Mertens will become the top seed in San Jose. Also, the Wimbledon wonder kid Emma Raducanu has accepted a wildcard to play in WTA Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic 2021.

The WTA 500 event will start on August 2 and conclude on August 8, 2021. Seemingly, it would kickstart the US Open Series for this season.

What does the injury mean for Kenin in 2021?

Since the injury is minimal, it is fair to assume that she might return to the Tour at WTA 1000 Montreal, starting August 9. Most significantly, heavyweights Naomi Osaka, Simona Halep, and Victoria Azarenka will also compete for the Rogers Cups 2021.

Above all, Kenin would be aiming to turn her results at the US Open 2021. Thus, a short break now will help her go full-throttle from the week after.
