The 23-time Grand Slam champion has made the decision to conclude her illustrious career. Following the US Open, Serena Williams will step away from professional tennis. Therefore, everyone wants to be a part of the champion’s last tournament, including supporters, family members, and veterans. Many legends of the sport have given their views on Serena over the past few weeks, and Navratilova was the latest one to give her thoughts.

During Serena’s relatively short farewell tour, which made two dates in Toronto and Cincinnati before the US Open, she was defeated by Belinda Bencic and Emma Raducanu. Speaking of this occasion, her last tournament, it served as the right place for one of the most powerful ladies ever to talk about what it takes to move from the sport.

Navratilova recalls her retirement from tennis while encouraging Serena to say ‘goodbye’

A few days before the commencement of the US Open, in an interview, Navratilova encouraged Williams to say goodbye to her beloved sport. She said, “It’s hard. When I retired in ’93 I told the press it was my last year which was a mistake because every single tournament was a fr**king tear-j*rker.”

Further, she talked about Serena’s way of announcing her retirement. She added, “Serena did it her way, which was announcing in a very glamorous way on Vogue magazine, but then she is not accepting the losses, she is not accepting what comes with it which is saying goodbye.”

Navratilova, who won 18 major singles titles, thinks Williams won’t have the happy ending that many people expect at the US Open.

Serena Williams moves to the second round

Speaking of Williams’ first-round performance, she outclassed 27-year-old Danka Kovinic, 6-3 6-3 and moved on to the second round. She will now compete against Anett Kontaveit for a spot in the tournament’s round of 32.

If she defeats Kontaveit, the six-time US Open champion will be one step closer to breaking Margaret Court’s all-time record. Kontaveit, who defeated Jaqueline Cristian in the opening round, will also be looking for a strong run to cover her disappointing performances at the Canadian and Cincinnati Masters.

Therefore, despite the fact that this will be their first encounter, the stakes are high. On August 31, Williams will play against the world no.2 from Estonia at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
