Madison Keys started off her Canadian Open?campaign with an emphatic win over Venus Williams in the first round. Despite taking on a declined version of Williams, Keys had to fight hard for the victory as the seven-time major champion saved eight match points before succumbing. However, Keys found her tournament dreams shattered right after registering the massive win over the legend.
Keys started her opening round in strength and cruised through for the better part of the match. But signs of discomfort slowly became quite evident as the match progressed. She had difficulties in closing out the match. Even though she got over the line, she did not have enough left in the tank to compete in the rest of the competition.

Reportedly, Keys was already suffering from injuries when she entered the match. She did not mention anything about a serious injury in the recent press conferences, so it was possibly something recent. She played Citi Open in Washington right after Wimbledon and featured in both singles and doubles. However, it seems that excessive time on-court might have gotten the better of her. But where exactly did Keys injure herself?
The American pulled out of the Canadian Open with a hip issue. Less than 24 hours after her massive victory over Venus, she took the tough call to not continue further. With a long summer ahead of her, it was in her best interest to withdraw. She would have taken on Jasmine Paolini in the round of 32 on Wednesday, but the Italian will now directly progress to the last 16.

Keys was coming into the hard-court swing after a really promising time on grass. She had won a title in Eastbourne and followed it up with a quarter-final run at Wimbledon. However, this injury could be a serious threat to her US Open hopes.

The US Open commences on 28th August 2023. Unfortunately, Keys has a little less than three weeks to recover. However, chances are that her concerns might be precautionary. After all, if she could complete and win a match with the hip issue, it is likely that the injury might be a minor one.
Ideally, the American would also like to get a couple of matches under her belt before entering New York. If she cannot step on the court next week in Cincinnati, then a wildcard option for Cleveland will also be up for grabs.
