American tennis sensation Coco Gauff scripted history by winning her maiden grand slam title at the recently concluded US Open. The 19-year-old WTA star finally proved her mettle at the grandest of stages as she defeated world number 1, Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a thrilling final at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. She became the first American teenager since her idol, Serena Williams, in 1999 to achieve such a feat.

Amidst all the jubilation surrounding her monumental victory, Gauff also found herself at the center of a controversy, involving Serena Williams‘ former coach Patrick Mouratoglou. Now, another of Williams’ former coaches, has reacted to the incident.

Newly crowned US Open champion Coco Gauff made a lot of reshuffling in her coaching team before finally hitting top gear during the North American hard-court swing. After parting ways with long-time coach Diego Moyano earlier this year, Gauff took advice from Patrick Mouratoglou for a brief period, although he was never appointed as her official coach. Afterwards, she roped in Spanish coach Pere Riba, before finally joining hands with Brad Gilbert prior to the Cincinnati Masters.

During an interview with CNN post Gauff’s US Open triumph, Mouratoglou stirred up a hornet’s nest as he seemed to be taking the credit for the teenager’s success.  Fans expressed their displeasure with Mouratoglou on X (formerly Twitter) after Gauff was presented as the coach’s ‘newest star’.

Rennae Stubbs, who is also known to have coached Serena Williams, jumped on the bandwagon as she reacted to the controversy with the emoji, ‘🤯’ on X.

It looked as if Stubbs sided with the fans as far as their opinion on the Mouratoglou controversy was concerned.
