Billie Jean King has made meaningful contributions to tennis and has paved a way for younger players to enjoy the sport fairly. Young Coco Gauff discussed her reactions to meeting the illustrious 12-time Grand Slam champion and praised her for her encouragement.

Billie Jean is not the first American, though, that the seventh-ranked player in the WTA ranking looks up to and admires. Serena Williams and her support for black women in sports is also something she cherishes.

Coco Gauff feels grateful to get acknowledged by Billie Jean King

When the 39-time major singles and doubles champion commended Gauff for embracing tennis as a platform for social change. The 18-year-old was taken aback by her ability to impress the 79-year-old former world number one. But the younger tennis player applauded the veteran player for providing a stage for those of their generation. She claimed that if it weren’t for her, she wouldn’t have had the chance to play.

She said, “I met her a couple of times, but every time I see her or meet her I get chills just because I’m super grateful that she made that decision then, because it’s kind of hard to go against the norm. They had nothing secured. So having someone like her actually acknowledge me and congratulate me and say she’s proud of me, not only how I am on the court, [but] off of court, means a lot to me.”

Additionally, the tennis player expressed her gratitude for the tennis legend and her contributions to the sport, saying that meeting her always gave her shivers. She also admires Serena Williams a great deal and wants her sporting legacy to live on.

Gauff 2022 year might be good for the upcoming season

Although the 18-year-old didn’t finish strong in the WTA Finals year-end tournaments. She is prepared to dominate the upcoming tennis season. Since five-time champion Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2004, she is the youngest major finalist to advance to the championship round after so many years.
