American tennis star Serena Williams and her husband Alexis Ohanian are doing great work to promote women’s sports. While Serena herself is the perfect example of women’s prowess in sports, Ohanian is also doing his part. Both Serena and Ohanian own principal shares in the NWSL team Angel City FC.

Apart from his engagement as a team owner, Ohanian also supports various activities and movements to promote women’s sports. Recently, the American came forward in support of Brittney Griner. The American basketball star is currently serving a prison sentence in Russia.

Alexis Ohanian shows his support for Brittney Griner

American basketball star Brittney Griner is serving a nine-year prison sentence in Russia for possession of drugs. While her supporters in her home country are rallying behind the athlete, the Russian government stands still in its decision. Back home, Griner’s fans gathered and raised their voice to bring Brittney back home. The only way possible is a prisoner exchange with the Russian government’s approval. Ohanian also showed his support by retweeting a support post for Griner.

The sports community from America has shown its unity in their support for the detained athlete.

It will be interesting to see if the two governments reach an agreement concerning the WNBA star’s return to the US.

From viewership to funding and support, these are only a handful of problems affecting women’s sports. The power couple has vowed to do their best to make a difference in bridging this gap. While Serena has played a major part in promoting and popularizing women’s tennis across the globe, Ohanian has his eyes on soccer.

In an interview with Forbes, the 39-year-old claimed that women’s sport holds a great future. Further, he said that it’s a good business opportunity and holds great potential, in terms of financial returns. Serena and Ohanian’s daughter, Olympia, has also shown an early interest in soccer. However, her mother is firm that her daughter will go for it only if the pay is on par with that of men’s soccer.
