Should mixed doubles replace traditional doubles in tennis? Kyrgios thinks so—what's your take?

Teaming up with Venus Williams, naturally, has a ring to it. And, Nick Kyrgios manifested that possibility. After playing with the American legend at Wimbledon in 2021, and entertaining the crowd with their thrilling opening-round victory, the Aussie has now expressed his desire to see a better inclusion of mixed doubles format in the Masters’ event. Not only that, but the ‘bad boy of tennis’ also named a WTA star whom he’d happily take the court with.

After a sharp decline in his tour-level appearances due to injury concerns in 2023, Kyrgios took up commentary gigs by ESPN. He frequently comments on trending tennis updates – the Jannik Sinner doping controversy for example. The Aussie recently featured on ‘The AO (Australian Open) Show‘ and opined that the “Masters events, instead of men’s doubles and women’s doubles, should be mixed.”

Intrigued with the Kyrgios’ admission, the hosts asked his list of women players who’d serve as a viable mixed doubles partner for him. The 2022 Wimbledon champion noted that while he’s “had the honor of playing with Serena and Venus,” he “would have liked to play with Ash Barty.” In his own words, Kyrgios had “the most uncomfortable experience” partnering with Serena Williams at the 2014 International Premier Tennis League due to their incompatible dynamics.

He further went on to praise his countrywoman Barty, explaining she was “by far one of the most talented female players to ever play the game. We would have done some damage on the court for sure.” Unfortunately for Kyrgios, his timing is off. The former World No. 1 retired from the sport in 2022 with a three-time Major win record.

Kyrgios, however, isn’t done yet. The Aussie recently surprised everyone after airing an exciting update. The 29-year-old has hinted he might return to the tour after two years.

Nick Kyrgios might play at the Brisbane International with plans for 2025

Australian superstar Nick Kyrgios has been mostly sidelined due to career-threatening injuries since his 2022 US Open quarterfinal run. After successfully addressing those concerns and taking enough time for rehabilitation, the former World No. 13 might be ready for the next season.

Have an interesting take?

While talking to Melbourne television, Kyrgios stated: “This is probably the best I’ve felt in two years, It was a 15 miracle percent chance that I was going to get back to playing at this level and here we are. To get back out there in front of the home fans is going to be sick.” Moreover, he also voiced his willingness to play in the World Tennis League exhibition event in Abu Dhabi, slated to commence on December 19.

For now, fans can expect that the Aussie will perform at the Brisbane International. Though his participation hasn’t received an official confirmation, chances are Kyrgios will look to capitalize on his restored form and entertain his home crowd.
