Australia is a land of many wonders. As the Australian Open 2022 rolls into its fifth day, players are getting to know more and more of the place that hosts the first major grand slam in a calendar year. Tennis’ ‘it couple’ Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils visited The National Gallery of Victoria, on one of their off days, to get a taste of the state.

Svitolina clarified it was their off-day, as they had played well yesterday and getting ready for the next day’s matches at the Australian Open. ‘Played well’ seems to be an understatement for world No. 20 Gael Monfils, who roared past Alexander Bublik, ranked 37th in the world with 6-1 6-0 6-4.

“I just felt good, amazing atmosphere, good vibes with crowd. Good Gael,” Monfils said, after his second-round match. “I was moving very fast, was tough for him to get through me. Serving great, couple trick shots. Everything is good. I’m on.” he added.

His next opponent is 16th seed Christian Garin, from Chile, who defeated Spain’s Pedro Martinez in a five-setter.

Svitolina, too, fought hard against Frenchwoman, Harmony Tan, who was forced to retire while trailing 5-1 in the deciding set. Harmony, who saved a match point in the third set, left the court in a wheelchair because of her left calf injury.

It’s always horrible for any athlete to get injured during the competition… She made it not easy for me,” said the Ukrainian, who ended up making 43 unforced errors.

Victoria Azarenka awaits Svitolina in the next round. The former World No. 1 from Belarus breezed past Jil Teichmann 6-1 6-2 to advance to the third round.

The couple seemed to have a pleasant time at The National Gallery of Victoria. They went around appreciating the displays. Monfils even asked one official from the gallery about how long a certain type of art piece might take to make.

Dressed casually in t-shirts and denim, they even clicked selfies for their Instagram account @g.e.m.s.life. Moreover, Svitolina also found a piece that she could: “see this one in our new home.
