When Serena Williams won her 23rd Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 2017, she became the undisputed GOAT in the WTA realm. Similarly, when Novak Djokovic created history by touching the same feat yesterday at the French Open, the rise of the GOAT debate in men’s tennis was bound to happen. This was obvious because the other two challengers for the coveted title were Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. As fans fight for their favorite stars, Venus Williams has picked her side as she knows what her sister and Djokovic have is something others don’t possess.
The glory of having even one Grand Slam title is huge for tennis players. However, having 23 of those prestigious titles is something that only the best amongst the best could do and Venus Williams seems to be agreeing with this fact.

For a moment yesterday, tennis enthusiasts saw the possibility of the events turning in a different way. Casper Ruud had initially taken the lead. He was gradually putting Djokovic’s dream to be the undisputed Grand Slam record holder on hold. However, he put his 19 years of experience on the court to good use and bounced back to win the French Open in straight sets.
Winning his third French Open title and 23rd Grand Slam title, he now shares the same number as the American tennis legend Serena Williams. And though the GOAT debate in the ATP realm still prevails, Djokovic has surpassed both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the Grand Slam tally.
And Venus Williams is not shying away from accepting that. After his glorious victory, she shared his feat on her Instagram story, and wrote, “Congrats! So inspiring!” She also added, “Only Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams Know what 23 feels like.”
Despite being one of the most celebrated tennis players of all time, even Venus Williams hasn’t experienced the rush of claiming 23 Major titles. Hence, she is not shying away from hailing the only two players who have been able to do so. However, it is not just Venus who feels this way.
