Maria Sharapova is one of the few tennis players whose off-court career shines as bright as her on-court career did during her heyday on the WTA Tour. After five grand slam titles and 21 weeks at the top, the Russian tennis legend decided to diversify her assets. She made several investments over the span of her tennis stint and even after that. Now, she has decided to follow in the footsteps of one of the most successful names in the tennis world to further strengthen her off-court endeavors.
It is none other than the Swiss Maestro Roger Federer, who has inspired Sharapova to invest in a renowned shoe brand. Prior to her investment in the shoe brand, Sharapova was already working as a board member of the clothing brand Moncler. She announced her partnership with the brand in 2022 and has been working with them ever since.

The former World No.1 can now add the shoe brand, Wolf & Shepherd, to her portfolio. With her investment in Wolf & Shepherd, Sharapova will now take on a new role. The brand was founded by Justin and Hope Schneider in 2015 in California. Since then, they have taken on several athletes, such as Rob Gronkowski and Steve Nash.
Schneider was excited to announce the new venture with Sharapova. “We’ve always admired and had a lot of respect for how Maria has pursued things on and off the court: as a mother, an entrepreneur, a businesswoman,” said Justin Schneider. He continued, “So I think there is a lot of opportunity to unearth those stories together.”
When she spoke of her collaboration, the five-time grand slam champion said that the comfort of the shoes helped her jump on the deal.
“If I’m wearing an elegant Dior suit and I’m not in the mood for a stiletto, this is the shoe I gravitate towards. And I think that really speaks to our daily life today. Everything should be comfortable and chic, which elevates our confidence.”
Unlike her ventures with other companies, the former Russian tennis player will be more involved with Wolf & Shepherd, according to a report by WWD. She will take on a strategic role, as she will advise the team on design and product creation. She has joined the company to expand the nascent women’s collection. As per Schneider, she has already helped the board quite a lot, especially with the Cruise Collection.
How similar is this deal to Roger Federer’s contract with On?

After scrapping his deal with Nike, Federer still wore their shoes for a few years as he did not have a sponsor. But that situation did not last long as he found a creative team in On, a Swiss running shoe company. He heard of the brand through his wife, Mirka Federer, and set up a meeting with the board members. Like Sharapova, Federer was inspired by the design of their sports shoes.
While the team was apprehensive at first, they eventually agreed to sign Federer and design shoes for him. Since 2019, the Swiss Maestro has been a member of the team. With his 3% stake in On, he was able to become the first and, for now, the only billionaire tennis player.
