In tennis, a player can choose a wide variety of shots to play. The technique for each shot is different, and no two players play it similarly. One shot that splits players apart is the backhand. A former coach of Serena Williams recently talked about the two-handed backhand being better in today’s scenario as he gave the head-to-head example of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

A player either uses both arms or just one arm to hit a backhand. The debate about the two backhand styles has been in motion ever since they came into existence. Mouratoglou’s recent comment has got a lot of attraction lately!

Patrick Mouratoglou is a legendary coach and tennis expert who provides valuable opinions on the sport. As he continues to share his knowledge of tennis, he recently talked about the two-handed backhand being better than the one-handed in the modern game. He said that tennis has changed quite a bit from its history. Bigger serves mean that players need to learn how to return with a two-handed backhand.

He also said, “It’s also better to counter punch and countering punching in today’s game is extremely important. Finally, the two-handed backhand becomes a big advantage when it comes to having to hit over the shoulder. The head-to-head between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer made it so clear that when a player has a one-handed backhand and has to hit too many shots over the shoulders, he gets tired, and it becomes easier to attack.”

The head-to-head with some of the greatest players of the ATP does provide some basis for Mouratoglou’s arguments. Additionally, Federer’s backhand was considered his weakness, which enhances the emphasis of his point.

But despite the advantages listed for the two-handed backhand, Mouratoglou also shared the merits of the one-handed shots.

The pros of the one-handed backhand

After listing the advantages of having a two-handed backhand, the French coach also talked about the positives of the one-handed backhand. As per him, the spin is much better. It becomes easier for players who only use their dominant hand to add heavy topspin to their shots. Additionally, those with a one-handed backhand can transition into a slice shot better than those who use both of their hands.
