At the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina clinched the bronze medal in the women’s singles tennis event. Accordingly, her husband and French tennis star Gael Monfils welcomed her with the medal at home.

What’s more interesting is that the couple had postponed their honeymoon to represent their respective countries in the Olympics. Now, that is a decision both would be proud to have made.

Gael Monfils welcomes wife Elina Svitolina with her Olympics medal

Taking to Twitter, the former World No. 6 Monfils shared what it feels like to have his win a bronze medal. Inarguably, his expression, while hilarious, was also adorable to see.

He captioned the post, “When your wifey brings Bronze medal,” with the hashtag ‘Proud Husband.’

It hasn’t even been a month since the Frenchman married Svitolina. And seemingly, it did not take much time for the Ukrainian World No. 6 to make her husband proud.

Monfils has had a hard time tennis-wise in the 2021 season. However, he is putting in his all every day to make a considerable comeback.

As for Svitolina, the medal would have helped boost her confidence and will allow her to go for big wins ahead in the WTA. Thus, it would be intriguing to see if she can her back her bronze medal victory with a maiden Grand Slam title.

For now, the new tennis couple would be ecstatic and might even celebrate before resuming their respective tennis tours. Without a doubt, the bronze medal is one of the greatest starts to their professional career post their marriage.

What’s next for Svitolina and Monfils on the tennis tour?

Soon, Svitolina and Monfils will have to join the WTA and ATP Tour, respectively, to begin their preparations for the hard-court season. Most significantly, their next goal would be the US Open 2021.

For this, the pair might contest at the Cincinnati Masters 2021 that will start on August 14th. From there on, they will try to make a final attempt of the year to claim their maiden major title.

All in all, the medal has brought inspiration not only to Svitolina but Monfils too. Hence, they would now be eager to better their achievements in 2021.
