Coaching big names and making your ground as a coach is not that easy! It takes a lot to train a champion; they work over their talents. But Serena Williams‘ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, has given it the test of time and trained some of the biggest names in this circuit, including the 42-year-old American tennis legend and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Recently, the French tennis coach opened up about what it’s like to coach top players with strong mentalities. In contrast, where a lot of people believe that it is quite easy to train a champion, he turned the table with his blunt revelation.

As someone who has been a part of the tennis arena, he has seen the ups and downs of the game. The 53-year-old tennis coach recently, in an interview with Game to Love, talked about what it’s like to train some big names while carrying a strong champion mindset themselves.

He said, “I know a lot of people think that it’s easier when you have Champions to coach them. I think it’s the opposite, you know for many reasons, first of all because of their personalities, they have extremely strong personalities that’s why they are where they are and they know a lot already about themselves. They have a lot of things that they believe in.”

Further, he also highlighted how it’s not easy to work with champions because, first of all, it’s extremely difficult to be respected by them. Secondly, they must believe in you as a coach and understand that you also know so much about tennis, just like them. After training Williams and Tsitsipas and watching them grow into some of the biggest names in the tennis world, it won’t be wrong to say that Mouratoglou knows how to nurture the champions in his way.

What qualities set Mouratoglou apart as a coach?

A few months ago, the 23-time Grand Slam champion’s former coach shared a video in which he talked about how he always got lucky and had good connections with the players. But in the same video, he also explained how he managed their egos and tough personalities at the same time. He said, “I was great at what most of the coaches are not great at. So, I was great at having a good energy with the player, being so motivated and connecting with the player.”

Subsequently, he also highlighted that he always treated the players as God in carrying positive aspects of their game. Further, he also highlighted that the connection with the players is the most important factor, because of which he has been with some of the greatest names in the tennis arena.
